Xistral Mountain

Xistral Mountain

A legendary mountain

One of the mountains that make up the Sierra de O Xistral, from whose summit our view is lost on the horizon. On clear days, several regions of the provinces of Lugo and A Coruña can be seen from here.

It is nestled in the heart of the Biosphere Reserve, and it is the birthplace of the most widespread legend in the region. The tale goes that when God created the world, He organized a race among three sister springs - Eume, Sor, and Landro - and promised that the first to reach the sea would be granted the life of a person each year.

Both agreed to stop and rest that same night, and at dawn the next day, they would continue their journey. However, in the middle of the night, Eume woke up and saw that she had been deceived by her sisters, who had already left. With fury, she crossed valleys and mountains, creating the Eume Canyon and being the first to reach the sea in the Ares estuary. That is why, from time to time, a person perishes drowned in its waters.
