Church of Saint Mary of As Pontes

Church of Saint Mary of As Pontes

A beautiful bell tower looking over the historic town of As Pontes.

The present-day parish church of As Pontes was built in the 18th century. It was probably built over a prior temple from the medieval times. Inside it, we can find a baroque altarpiece by the sculptor rodríguez de Santiago, who also made de icons of St Peter, St Roch and St James Pilgrim. The high altar is dominated by the statue of the Virgin of the Assumption, patron saint of As Pontes until 1770, when it changed to the Virgin of Carmel.

The outside of the church went through an important remodelling in 1965, when the atrium was demolished and the façade was extended. It is worth mentioning its beautiful baroque bell tower, which keeps an old sundial on its base.
