Castle of the Andrade

Castle of the Andrade

The castle of hunger

It was built by order of Fernán Pérez de Andrade III between 1369 and 1377, on the grounds of the Sobrado Monastery, on the Pena Leboreira, in the parish of Santa María de Nogueirosa. This castle, which was not the residence of the counts, is considered a watchtower. Its irregular construction is due to adapting to the shape of the rock on which it is built. The walls have a thickness of 2.57 meters. Access to the main tower was through a drawbridge. From its terrace, a beautiful panoramic view of the town of Pontedeume and its surroundings can be admired.

Legend has it that in a hidden place in the depths of the castle, two young lovers, Elvira, the maiden of the Lady of Andrade, and Mauro, the illegitimate son of Fernán Pérez de Andrade, perished from hunger, buried alive. That is why the castle is still known today as the Castle of Hunger.
