Monastery of Saint Mary of Monfero

Where history and spirituality intertwine in an eternal embrace

Also known as the Convent of the Virgin of A Cela, it was founded in the 12th century by the nobles Alfonso Bermúdez and Pedro Osorio. Despite the passage of years and the dilapidated state of several of its dependencies, the building still reflects the splendor it experienced in times past, highlighting its main facade with a checkered appearance due to the combination of granite and slate.

The monastery undoubtedly conceals one of the most impressive jewels of religious architecture in Galicia and is composed of various structures: the church, chapterhouse, side chapels, baptistery, gatehouse, three cloisters, refectory, and kitchen.

The most unique element is the Church of Santa María, a Baroque treasure erected on a previous Romanesque temple. The temple, which is open to visitors, also houses the Tourist Office of the Monfero municipality.
