Neighbourhood As Veigas

Neighbourhood As Veigas

The city planned in the heart of As Pontes and which is the jewel of our industrial heritage.

The new power station built by the National Company Calvo Sotelo (ENCASO) means the arrival of a great number of workers and their families. ENCASO builds a neighbourhood, which will be built in several stages between 1946 and 1962, in order to shelter 1,500 people.

The neighbourhood is designed by the architect Javier G. Lomas and is placed within a project called “Plano General. Poblado y zona de fábrica”. 230 homes are build within an area of 27 ha with facilities for self-sufficiency, such as schools, a medical clinic, a supermarket, a church and sport and leisure facilities, outstanding the social centre Lar and the football field.

The neighbourhood As Veigas is a small city in the heart of As Pontes, and it is also a jewel within our cultural heritage due to its architectural and historical value. It was one of the first cities planned in Galicia. It belongs to the model of industrial and mining parks created in the 19th century in the United Kingdom, France and Germany.
